2014 New Smyrna Speedway Sportsman Rules
Any rule changes made in 2014 are highlighted in BLUE.
The rules and/or regulations set forth herein provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements of such events. These rules shall govern the condition of all such events. All participants are deemed to have complied with these rules. No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from publications of or compliance with these rules and/or regulations. Speedway rules are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant.
*Speedway Officials shall be empowered to permit minor deviations from any of the specifications herein or impose any further restrictions that in his/her opinion does not alter the minimum acceptable requirements. No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from such altercation of specifications.
*Speedway reserves the right to update, modify, and/or delete rules at any time deemed necessary to insure safety, fair competition or any other reason that may be appropriate.
*Any interpretation or deviation of these rules is left to the officials. Any decision of and by Speedway Officials is final.
*Unsportsmanlike-like conduct can carry a minimum $100.00 fine and/or suspension. Any and all fines will be added to the point’s fund at the end of the racing season.
* Any competitor that finishes in the top 5 may be required, at their expense, to remove the intake, heads, and/or oil pan for inspection purposes.
*All cars must go through technical inspection prior to car taking to the track for practice. Cars will be weighed with driver, and may be done prior to or after qualifying and prior to or after the feature. Reading of designated scales will be official.

The word STOCK used within this set of rules means as originally produced by the manufacturer for that make/model/year of car with no altering or modifications. Stock replacement parts ok. Must be same dimensions, weight, and/or volume as OEM part. Determination of whether an aftermarket part is legal will be the tech inspector’s decision.
NO CARBON FIBER OR TITANIUM PERMITTED ANYWHERE ON CAR. NO BUMP STOPS. NO TRACTION CONTROL DEVICE(S) OF ANY KIND.
IF IT DOESN’T SAY YOU CAN, YOU CAN’T!
CAR:
A. Minimum wheelbase of 106 inches. Must be same on both sides 3/4 inches tolerance.
B. Cars will be allowed at the discretion of the tech official.
CHASSIS:
A. Full frame cars must use complete stock frame. Unibody cars must use stock front and rear clips tied together with four foot pieces of 2” x 2” minimum boxed tubing on each side.
B. Cross member can be notched and boxed to accommodate fuel pump only.
C. Ride height minimum is 4” and body clearance is 4” minimum. No pulling up on car in tech line.
ROLL CAGE:
Required – SEE SAFETY RULES.
FUEL CELL:
Required – SEE SAFETY RULES.
BODY:
A. Body may be steel, aluminum or fiberglass. Body width must not exceed 1” outside the tire width. Tires cannot extend beyond body.
B. Front windshield mandatory, rear optional 1/8’ LEXAN. No side windows. Must be full windshield.
C. Bumpers may remain stock type or be replaced with pipe bumper and bumper cover.
D. Nose cover mandatory.
E. Hood and trunk: must remove locks and replace with hood pins.
F. Spoiler maximum 6” but cannot extend beyond body. No spoiler sides.
G. No sideboards, wings or fins.
SUSPENSION:
A. Stock steering type box and components in stock location. Steering shaft must be track approved with center steering knuckle. No straight steering shafts.
B. Any stock steel springs. Five inch OD; NO coil over’s.
C. Only one shock per wheel permitted. All shocks must be steel; non-adjustable (re-valving shocks are legal). Adjustable shafts and canisters are not permitted. Rear mounts location optional on rear axle
D. Front and rear wedge bolts are optional. Leaf springs may use adjustable rear mount.
E. Spindles must be stock. Steel safety hub permitted to fit stock spindle; No drop spindles of any kind.
F. Tubular upper control arms optional. Stock lower control arms in stock location. Lower control arms must be per original manufacturer’s specifications for year/make/model.
G. Stock ball joints non-adjustable. No precision ball joints.
H. Stock center link, tie rods, pitman arm and idler arm. OPTION: Outer tie rods may be replaced with heim joints.
I. Front sway bar must be stock or aftermarket Howe style only.
J. No mixing of parts must be Chevy on Chevy, Ford on Ford, and Dodge on Dodge. Exception: Rear end.
ENGINE:
Stock cast iron production blocks only. Chevrolet 350; Dodge 360; Ford 351 maximum. Chevy 602 will be teched 100% by the GM Tech Manual. Four bolt main engines ok.
A. Maximum .060 overbore.
B. Crankshaft: Stock unmodified crankshaft, stock stroke for block used. Balancing ok. Cast crankshaft – 50lbs minimum. Steel crankshaft – 51 lbs minimum.
C. High volume oil pump o.k.
D. Balancer: Stock.
E. Rods: Stock steel or cast. Size and length must be stock.
F. Pistons: Any stock two or four eyebrow three ring or stock flat top piston.
G. Lifters: Stock hydraulic or solid lifters. No oversized.
H. Camshaft: Any flat tappet or hydraulic. .525 maximum lift.
I. Timing Chain: Stock. Aftermarket double row chain o.k.
J. Heads: Any stock, straight plug, steel or cast head. No gasket matching. World Product SR head ok NO VORTEX.
K. Valves: Intake 1.94 and Exhaust 1.50. Stock replacement stainless steel o.k.
L. Valve Springs: Stock diameter valve springs and retainers or stock Comp Cam #981 valve spring. No double springs.
M. Rocker Arms: Standard mounted, stock ratio roller rockers (1.5). No other size.
N. Screw in studs and guide plates ok. Stock stud diameter (3/8”) polylocks o.k. No stud girdles.
O. Intake: Stock automotive cast iron 2 or 4 barrel or Edelbrock 2101 unmodified.
P. Carburetor: Stock Holley #4412, 500 cfm with maximum 1.60 spacer/adapter between intake and carburetor. Changing of jets, power valves, drilling of holes in butterflies permitted. Removal of choke plate permitted, tower must remain in place and be unmodified.
Q. Air Filter: 14” diameter. Can extend through the hood.
R. Distributor: Stock HEI or single points fired distributor. Super coil o.k. NO MSD.
S. Pulleys: Optional.
T. Mechanical fuel pumps only. No electric.
U. Exhaust: Headers are optional.
V. Water pump: Stock or aluminum o.k.
W. Radiator: Aluminum o.k.
X. 602 Crate Engine optional. Must run Holley 650 HP carb. Must fit track gauges.
Y. Engine location: Most forward spark plug must be even or ahead of top ball joint. Solid motor mounts o.k.
Z. Engine height to be 12” minimum plus or minus 1”.
TRANSMISSION:
A. Any stock OEM standard or automatic. Must have all forward and reverse gears working. No modifications. No straight cut gears.
B. Stock OEM clutch and flywheel; nodular iron ok. Steel bell housing mandatory. No 10,000 RPM clutches. No aluminum components in disc or pressure plate.
C. Steel Driveshaft only. Must be painted white.
DIFFERENTIAL:
A. Stock, Ford 9” steel floater or quick change
B. Must be locked. No clutched differentials.
C. Wheel studs must be minimum 1/2? diameter.
D. No cambered rear ends.
E. May use quick change rear. Must have steel tubes. No cambered tubes. Must have spool. Maximum 2” offset. No Mini Quick Change rears allowed.
BRAKES:
A. 4 wheel brakes all in working order at all times.
B. Single piston steel calipers only. Single piston Howe allowed.
WHEELS & TIRES:
A. 8” steel racing wheels with any offset.
B. Track approved 8” tires only.
C. No Bleeders.
WEIGHT:
A. 3000 lbs. Left side maximum weight 56%.
B. 3 Link – Add 50lbs.
BATTERY:
12 volt only. SEE SAFETY RULES.
