2014 New Smyrna Speedway "Open" Modified Rules
Any changes made to this rule book in 2014 are written in BLUE
IF YOU HAVE A RULE DISPUTE, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR CURRENT RULE BOOK IN HAND AND SPECIFY THE RULE DISPUTED TO THE CHIEF TECH INSPECTOR.
ALL DECISIONS MADE ON RACE NIGHT ARE FINAL!
OFFICIALS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ADD, DELETE OR MODIFY ANY RULE(S) AS NEEDED TO IMPROVE THE COMPETITIVENESS OF ANY OR ALL RACING IF NECESSARY.
1. CAR:
American made, factory production, 1970 or newer with parallel frame, rear wheel drive only. Minimum wheelbase 108”. Wheelbase must be within 1/2? side-to-side.
2. CHASSIS:
A. Fabricated/tubular frames must be approved by Tech. Frames may be cut in rear only at point not further than 36” from center of rear end housing.
B. Frames may not be widened or narrowed and must be able to support roll cage on both sides. Front cross member may be notched for radiator clearance only. NO widening or fabricating of cross member.
C. Stock clip cars 56% left side; Fabricated clip cars 56% left side maximum plus 50 lbs.
D. Ride height minimum 4” Body, Frame and Lead. No pulling up on car in tech line.
3. BODY:
A. Width 66” maximum. Length 120” maximum measured from front of door to end of rear quarter. 6” maximum body rake. Body must be mounted straight on chassis.
B. Firewalls can be aluminum and floorboards are made of Steel only.
C. Fiberglass, aluminum or steel duplicates of body parts are permitted.
D. Full roof is mandatory and must cover complete halo bar. Maximum 1” drip rails allowed.
E. Original roof line of vehicle should be maintained with a maximum of one (” drop rear to front.
F. No wings or other ground effects anywhere inside or outside car.
G. Rear spoiler allowed 6” x 60” only.
H. Engine compartment will remain open, no side panels; hood sides may have a maximum six (6) inch drop and be enclosed at rear of hood; bodies should extend no further than back of block. No more than 3” of rake from firewall to rear of door. No more than 3” of rake from back of door to rear of quarter panel. (NOTE: passenger side of body must be no further forward than rear of block.)
I. Lower rear quarter panel turn not to exceed one 1″ maximum with a minimum of two (2) one 1″ inch braces/supports. Quarter panel minimum height from top to bottom in rear is 18”.
J. Air box cannot be wider than the frame rails.
K. Full windshield required. 1/8 “ Lexan ONLY. Rear window optional. If used, must be lexan. 1/8” lexan only.
4. ROLL CAGE:
A. Must consist of continuous hoops, not less than 1-3/4” outside diameter and must have a wall thickness of at least .095.
B. Must be frame mounted in at least six (6) places.
C. Must consist of configuration of front and rear hoops connected by tubing on the sides or side hoops. Driver’s head must not protrude above cage with helmet on and strapped in driver’s seat. Roll cage must be securely supported and braced.
D. Protection of feet is mandatory. Bar across back of engine with vertical bars and rub rails or similar protection.
E. No brace bars forward of cage may be higher than stock hood height.
F. Driver door bars must be as parallel with the ground as possible and located perpendicular to the driver so as to provide maximum protection for driver without undue difficulty in getting into or out of the vehicle. The side bars must be welded to the front and rear of the roll cage members. Door bars less than .095” thickness should have four (4) bars at least 1 1/2” diameter.
G. Bumpers:
1. Must be used in both front and rear. Front bumpers should be mounted frame end to frame end with the bottom loop parallel to the ground. Should be made of minimum 1-1/4” pipe and must be welded to support car if lifted by wrecker.
2. Rear bumpers, nerf bars, and bodies must not extend beyond width of rear tires and must not contain any sharp edges.
3. Rear bumpers may be constructed of pipe or flat stock and must protect fuel cell. Center bumpers (FRONT AND REAR must be 18 inches (plus or minus 2”) from ground.
5. FUEL CELL:
A. Must be enclosed in metal container and, must be protected in rear of axle by roll cage tubing mounted securely.
B. No part of fuel cell shall be lower than protective tubing. Protective tubing should be no wider than 6” on both sides of fuel cell. 9” minimum fuel cell height.
6. DRIVESHAFT:
A. No aluminum drive shafts, must be steel. Must be painted white.
7. SUSPENSION:
A. Stock passenger car spindles only; NO fabricated spindles. Center of ball joint to center of tie rod must be stock measurement as well as the same measurement on both sides.
B. Bottom A-frames cannot be altered or moved.
C. Single piston, steel calipers only.
D. One piece OEM or aftermarket sway bar only.
E. Upper A-frames can be tubular and are allowed to be moved.
F. No coil over shocks, either front or rear. Coil over eliminators may be used in rear only with minimum spring diameter 4 1/2 “.
G. No fiberglass springs allowed. No torsion bars allowed in rear.
H. No hydraulic, ratchet or electric weight jacks anywhere in or on car.
I. One shock per wheel only. Aluminum knuckle o. k. Adjustable shafts and canisters are NOT permitted. J. NO aluminum shocks.
K. OEM steering only. Heim joints on outer tie rod ok. No racks.
L. Front rotors may be re-drilled for larger studs or different lug pattern, but may not be lightened.
M. After market center link is allowed.
8. ENGINE:
A. Any American made engine may be used as long as the rear of the engine (bell housing flange) is mounted at least 72 inches forward from the center line of the rear axle. Engine offset must be kept within the front stub. (engine offset maximum two (2) inches of center- line of front cross member.) Crankshaft height minimum will be 11 inches from the ground to front center of crankshaft. Tolerance plus or minus one (1) inch. SB2 engines are permitted. Must be wet sump only. Single stage, external drive oil pump permitted.
B. NO TOTAL “dry” sump systems allowed. “Wet” system must be operative.
C. One (1) two (2) barrel or one (1) four (4) barrel carburetor o. k. Must be normal aspirated. Use of Holley #4412, 500 cfm carburetor must fit track gauges.
D. Exhaust system must be mounted in such a way as to direct spent fumes away from cockpit of vehicle and must extend past frame rail, and away from all areas of possible fuel spillage.
E. Refer to weight section.
9. TRANSMISSION:
A. OEM type production transmissions or T10 will be allowed. Three (3) speed, four (4) speed and automatic. NO FIVE (5) SPEED TRANSMISSIONS. NO in/out boxes. NO buttons or couplers. Must all be clutch operated with motor running and car still in position. Driver must be able to engage car in gear and move forward, then backward at time of inspection. Clutch must be inside bell housing.
B. Must have at least one gear forward and reverse, plus a neutral position and must be able to be shifted by driver. (Richmond case o.k.).
C. Clutch type must be equipped with an explosion proof bell housing/ If an explosion proof bell housing is not available for your engine, or if you prefer, you can construct a shield of at least 1/2? x 6” steel covering the clutch area 360 degrees and be securely fastened. (Highly recommended to include automatic transmissions.)
D. Clutch size minimum 5-1/2”.
E. NO Jericho transmissions.
10. DIFFERENTIAL:
A. Must be 9” floater or quick change.
B. NO Wide 5.
C. NO rear sway bar.
11. WHEELS & TIRES:
A. Track approved tires only.
B. Wheels maximum width 8”, steel only. Must be racing wheel. NO stock type wheels. Tires must not be outside nerf bars.
C. 82” tread width maximum, outside to outside, NO tolerance.
D. No Bleeders.
12. WEIGHT:
A. GM Crate 604 (Pro Late Model Legal) – 2,400 lbs., 56% left side. Any E-Modified Motor 2,400lbs., 58% left side. All other motors must weigh 7lbs. per cubic inch, 56% left side.
B. Weight after race 1 lb. per lap given for fuel usage.
C. It is mandatory that weight, cubic inches, and left side percentage be displayed on the right side of your hood at all times.
D. Weight and left side percentage can be checked at ANY time before, during or after time trials and/or racing event with driver sitting in the normal driving position with helmet and uniform.
13. BATTERY:
Must not be located in driver’s compartment.
14. BRAKES:
A. Brakes must lock up all four (4) wheels during post inspection.
B. Front brakes must consist of OEM components. Rear brakes may consist of aftermarket components. Single piston steel only. Howe stock appearing o. k.
